  • Getting plenty of sleep is good for your noggin. That’s a no brainer. But which foods fuel a good night’s sleep?
.
The answer is foods which are rich in tryptophan ( trip-toe-fan) that helps boost our natural melatonin production. Melatonin is the released in larger amounts as we get closer to bed time, so increasing melatonin naturally in the evening can help us sleep better.
.
🍒 Cherries have been found to be rich in melatonin and are a natural source of this sleep aiding hormone
.
🥝 In small studies, eating 2 kiwi fruits before bed helped people fall asleep more quickly and sleep for longer
.
🍌Bananas trigger tryptophan production and also contain muscle-relaxing magnesium
.
🥛Warm milk before bed can help increase our body temperature, which can help relax muscles

  • We all know we should be giving our brains plenty of screen rest. So, why are screens such a sleep disrupter? Listen as Dr Clara explains (then take a break!)

  • Here’s a spot of brain trivia to kickstart your Monday. 😊
So, you might be really ticklish…but why is it that you can’t tickle yourself?!
.
Neuroscientists believe that the cerebellum, a small area responsible for coordinating movement and motion, predicts our own sensory actions and differentiates them. In other words, the cerebellum warns your brain that a ‘tickle’ is coming and the sensory part of the brain ignores it.

  • We’re a nation of dog lovers and that could be good for our brains and overall health! A 12-year study looking at nearly 3.5 million people showed that owning a dog was related to a lower risk for heart disease, stroke and heart attack. And here’s why…🐾 Exercise. Having to walk your dog encourages regular physical activity, which is important for blood flow to our brains, reducing blood pressure and helping sleep.
.
🐾 Helping with stress. Who can resist those puppy dog eyes? Petting a dog can lower blood pressure and increase levels of feel good brain chemicals (neuro-transmitters) dopamine and serotonin. This helps with feelings of calm and helps us feel happy and relaxed.
.
🐾 Having company. Social relationships and networks are a key part of helping your brain and are one of our Noggin building blocks to better brain health. Having a dog has been shown to help with depression – the feeling of connection with your pet is key, as well as an increased social interaction that happens when you are out walking your dog or taking them to the park.
.
🐾 Gut health. Having a dog also means you are more likely to be spending time outside as well as cleaning up after them and washing their fur. This can increase our exposure to different types of bacteria and other bugs that are helpful for supporting our immune system. It’s great for kids too – even as a baby, exposure to a pet can help with our natural gut bacteria which is important for overall health.

  • We all know that regular exercise is good for our health and it can improve our mood too. But did you know that that brisk walk, run or cycle could help your brain problem solve?Scientists believe that for a period of time after exercise, our bodies produce a chemical that makes the brain more receptive to learning. So if you’re stuck on a work problem or struggling with homework, taking time out for a quick burst of activity could help your brain find the answers! You’ll find lots more interesting brain fodder on our blog, via the link in bio ☝️

  • Did you know that around 75% of our brains are made up of water? Another reason to stay hydrated, as not drinking enough fluids means the brain has to work harder, resulting in impaired cognitive function, tiredness and changes in mood. 💧

  • Did you know that your brain actually ‘edits’ out a lot of everyday useless information you don’t need? And what’s really clever, is that we’re not even aware of it! For example, it’s not particularly useful to be able to see the end of your own nose all day, so the brain just ignores that information and we just don’t notice it!

  • We all know it’s the nice thing to do….but did you know that being kind is actually good for your brain? Our brains have something called mirror neurons, which mean when we see someone cry, we may also feel sad and when we see someone laughing or smiling, we feel like we want to laugh or smile too.
.
Our responses reflect what we see the other person experiencing. The more we practice being kind, the more our brains benefit from this.
.
Did that make you smile? 😊

  • It’s known as one of the ‘happy hormones’ but Serotonin does a LOT more than just manage our moods. This essential chemical also helps regulate sleep and appetite and helps our brain cells communicate. Clever stuff!Did you know that up to 95% of serotonin is made in our intestines NOT in our brains? This is another reason why a healthy diet is so important for overall brain power. To help keep your happy hormone levels high make sure you’re getting enough of these essential vitamins:🧠 Vitamin B6 contributes to normal mental function. Good vegetable sources include avocados, cabbage, green beans, and lentils. Good animal sources are poultry, liver, and fish.🧠 Vitamin D which can be sourced through a balanced diet and is also formed under sunlight, is essential to support your immune system and is also associated with mood in initial scientific studies.🧠 Omega-3 fatty acids are found in fish such as salmon and mackerel, flaxseed , oil & chiaseeds also contain a lot of omega-3.
